The Importance of Protecting the Skin from the Sun in the Future

More or less, we all know about the harmful effects of solar radiation on our skin. But we often forget that the impact of continuous exposure to the sun without sunscreen is not only immediate and visible, but also has long-term consequences that – as strange as it sounds – can affect our skin throughout our adult lives. So it is worth seeing how our sun protection in the present time is connected to the remaining years of our lives.

"Sun capital", is being spent or being leveraged?

From the moment we are born, our skin has a predetermined “reserve of resistance” to UV radiation – before its health and appearance are at risk – called “sun capital“. This percentage is determined by our phototype but is also related to the special characteristics that each skin has by nature, and therefore to the defenses it has to “fortify” itself against the sun. Each exposure to the sun gradually reduces our “sun capital”. The impressive thing is that 50% of it has been exhausted in just 15 years of our life! For light-skinned people the “sun capital ” is 50,000 hours of sun exposure throughout their lifetime, while for those with a dark phototype (which is usually found in Mediterranean peoples) the “sun capital” is 150,000 hours, taking into account that the sunshine in Greece is 3,000 hours per year*. Unfortunately, the “solar capital” can neither be expanded nor replenished. So the more judiciously we use it in the course of our lives, distributing it in short intervals of sun exposure (with the appropriate precautions: use of appropriate sunscreen, glasses and a hat, avoiding exposure during the “dangerous” hours 11:00-16:00) the more protected we are we are against the effects of ultraviolet radiation on our skin.

The sun knows addition

In the matter of skin damage from solar radiation, the cumulative path is followed, and in fact already from the first times we are exposed to the sun as babies! The hours we spend under UV radiation without sunscreen cause accumulated wear and tear on the skin, making it vulnerable to sun damage at any point in our lives. In fact, the most wear and tear usually occurs in our adult lives, considering that as babies and children we have someone taking care of our skin before us: making sure we put on sunscreen and reapplying often, urging us to stay under from the umbrella, to wear us a hat and glasses, etc. while on the contrary as adults living in a fast modern everyday life, we often forget or neglect the basics of sun protection.

A change of perspective makes all the difference

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Ut elit tellus, luctus nec ullamcorper mattis, pulvinar dapibus leo.Extended exposure to the sun without sunscreen leads to signs of photoaging. But the way we deal with these signs at each age probably differs. Shortly after 20 years old, we may not pay attention to the fine lines formed due to a lot of exposure to the sun, because the overall appearance of our face reflects youth, freshness and radiance. The same fine lines, however, are evaluated differently on a more mature skin that has, in addition, shown the normal signs of age. Thus, using sun protection as early as possible has a long-term positive sign – beyond the good health and image of our skin – and the psychology and self-confidence that having a beautiful skin gives us.

In our effort to protect our skin from the effects of the sun today, tomorrow and in the distant future, the specialized sun protection series for babies, children and adults are as always by our side.
